New dawn taking space transport to new heights

It has all the qualities of an aircraft but with its rocket engine, the Dawn Mk-II Aurora can fly faster and higher than any jet. “We have a real path to this being the first vehicle that flies to 100 km altitude - the border of space - twice in a day,“ said Stefan Powell, a co-founder of Dawn Aerospace. “No one’s ever done that.“

Kremlin accuses Kyiv of breaking moratorium

Russia has accused Ukraine of attacking its energy facilities despite a moratorium on such strikes, saying a key piece of gas infrastructure in the town of Sudzha had been practically destroyed. A Ukrainian official said it was Russia that attacked the gas transit point in Sudzha. It could not be independently confired which side was responsible.

Suspected Baltic Sea cable sabotage probed

Sweden is investigating a possible breach of an undersea cable off the country’s southwestern coast in the Baltic Sea, the coastguard says, in an area where multiple seabed cables have been damaged in recent months. The Baltic Sea region is on alert and the NATO alliance has boosted its presence after a series of power cable, telecom and gas pipeline outages since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. Most were caused by civilian ships dragging their anchors.

Devastated mourners gather for deceased hostages

People from local Jewish communities have gathered in London to mourn the deaths of four Israeli hostages whose bodies have been released by Hamas. The remains handed over by militants were presumed to include Shiri Bibas and her two children, Ariel and Kfir — and the Israeli government confirmed that one of the bodies returned was of Oded Lifshitz, who was 83 when he was abducted.

Cutouts help lonely sunfish regain its appetite

An aquarium in Japan’s Yamaguchi Prefecture has come up with a unique solution to improve the deteriorated health of its beloved sunfish affected by the lack of visitors. Shimonoseki City Aquarium Kaikyokan closed its doors temporarily on December 1 to undergo restorations, causing its star sunfish, which the aquarium says has a “very curious” personality, to lose its appetite within a week as its regular crowd of visitors disappeared.
